Hello David,
The latest edition of our National Competition Rules (NCR) is now available, bringing together a number of changes and clarifications across the sport.

The updates are designed to keep our regulations clear, consistent and up to date, helping competitors, organisers, officials, volunteers and clubs prepare for the season ahead.

Key changes include:

  • Circuit Racing: all Race marshals must hold a current Motorsport UK registration, alongside updates to Safety Car procedures, race stoppages and multi-driver entries.
  • Rallycross: clarified false start rules and penalties, updated new-driver assessment requirements, and changes to when observed practice laps are required.
  • Road and Historic Road Rally: the regulations for each discipline have been separated out to make the rules easier to understand.
  • Stage Rally: National GT cars are now permitted in UK competition, as defined in Ch.13 App. 16 Art.2.3.I, to Class 3.
  • Cross Country: a new entry-level Junior Competitive Safari for drivers aged 14+, alongside the introduction of a new approved Junior Trials Vehicle.
  • Autotest and Autosolo: updated eligibility for younger drivers, including changes to vehicle eligibility and the forced-induction coefficient.
  • Competitor licensing: competitors with a cochlear implant or impaired hearing are recommended to display a Motorsport UK-approved logo to alert marshals following an incident.
  • Medical requirements: updates include clarification of the medical standards for competition licences and changes to some medical review requirements for competitors with diabetes.
  • Officials and event procedures: changes to official upgrading requirements, alongside clarification of Stewards’ powers and when Provisional Results become Final Results.

Most of these changes will come into effect from 1st January 2027, giving you time to understand what they mean for your discipline or role.

Whether you’re competing, organising, officiating or volunteering, please familiarise yourself with the regulations relevant to you before your next event.

IMPACT DATA RECORDER – MANDATORY FROM 1ST JANUARY 2027

From 1st January 2027, Impact Data Recorders (IDRs) will be mandatory for all competitors in Race, Stage Rally and Rallycross.

The FIA Impact Data Recorder is a small, lightweight device fitted inside your competition vehicle. It automatically records data when a high-G impact occurs, helping Motorsport UK better understand incidents and support evidence-based improvements to safety across the sport.

If you compete in Race, Stage Rally or Rallycross, your competition vehicle will need an IDR from 1st January 2027. Each competition vehicle requires its own device.

IDRs are now available to pre-order for the 2027 season for £49.35, including VAT and delivery.

Find out everything you need to know, including how IDRs work, installation, ordering and what you need to do ahead of your first event in 2027, on our dedicated IDR information page.
